Public DB temporarily offline

Post by Assembler Maniac » 12 May 2008 15:09

The pubdb is experiencing some extreme slowdowns. Since this will directly affect how Aseco runs, it's not serving data at this moment.

No config change is necessary for existing servers, it will simply stop trying to interact with the public database and quietly continue to work ok. You may see multiple messages in the console that the server is offline. These may be annoying, but shouldn't affect anything. Next version this will be limited to 1 msg displayed when it goes offline (or is offline when you start aseco), and won't re-appear until it's been on/off again, or you restart aseco.

I'll post when it's back up again.

Thanks for being patient.

Hi,

Do you have an ETA for this; is it days or longer? Do you need any donations to help out?

Regards,

Nick.

What I need is a clone of me so I can do billable work for $$$, spend time with my wife, do repairs around the house, AND work on ASECO/RASP.

Know anyone who can clone me?

Here you go:

Code: Select all

  AM2 = AM.clone();
  AM2.removeDependency('work');
  AM2.removeDependency('family');
  AM2.removeDependency('house');
  AM2.enhanceAseco(true);
  AM.enhanceAseco(false);
  lottery.pay(1000000, AM);
  AM.removeDependency('work');
  AM.enjoyLife(true);
It's easy as pie, have fun^^

Thanks guys, great idea, wish it were that simple.

Basically here's what has to happen to make the pubdb go live again.

1. Rewrite the pubdb plugin so it loads the address from a webpage (at floschnell.de) so we can move the pubdb to a new location without having to notify everyone of the address change. It will read the address at every startup of aseco.

2. Upgrade the mysql server pc that will host the database from 2.4Ghz/768M machine to 3.2Ghz/2G machine. This is the same machine that hosted the db prior to it being moved to Flo's host. We just didn't realize the impact of moving because there weren't many people were using it. Upgrading the machine now means that once everything is changed over there won't be anymore downtime.

Right now the pubdb is being hosted on a virtual server someplace, and it's really slow. It's fine for doing all of the web related stuff (which the new mysql server won't have), but it can't seem to handle the amount of db activity that we've thrown at it.

All I can say is please be patient. Plans are made, but available time is in short supply right now, so I can't even give an estimate of when it'll be ready.

If someone wants to develop a pubdb replacement using dedimania, you're welcome to do it. Neither Flo nor I have enough free time to dedicate to getting it up an running well, and it's just not worth it. I'm having enough trouble finding time to just get a server rebuilt for the pubdb. Coding takes longer, so it's jut not going to happen.

I agree with AM,

It takes long to code, but I still hope someone will do that :)

its possible to get xaseco running alongside aseco 2.0, i am doing it for dedimania and a couple other features. Its not totally perfect, but it works well enough, just a couple of minor annoyances. I disabled the manialinks on xaseco which kills alot of the commands, none of the dedimania chat commands work, but they aren't all that important anyway. If you want more info about how i did it, pm me.

Nah, don't want to ;-)
But since it has been written for Xaseco by Xymph and (I think) it needs no core changes in the overall system, it should be "easy" to port it to Aseco.

Actually, a new onEverySecond event needs to be generated by the core system, but that's easy to add.

Yeah, true... But this could be emulated by reacting onMainLoop without changing the core =) (while the global event would be the cleaner solution, that's out of the question^^)
