Trikes?

Post by rcdraco » 01 Oct 2008 17:16

I am working on a vehicle design, and I'm running into the idea that a true trike would behave akwardly ingame, such as having the rear tire bob up or down if it's set as the right or left tire. Will this happen, or does trackmania actually check where the tire hits the ground?

I'm still working out the design, add one to the last one and you can see what it looks like from a better angle. :P

You're sort of right, but for the wrong reasons.

The game engine has only one standard car type per environment, and of course that vehicle is a standard 4 wheel car. In effect your centrally mounted rear wheels are bounced by the game as the standard LRWheel, and RRWheel(s) would be, which you've realised. It's not really "awkward" (you'll have to judge for yourself) though, but the two wheels will bounce slightly differently if the car pitches side to side along it's length axis.

This is why alternative shape and size vehicles, crash, bounce, and handle in exactly the same way as the default vehicle.

This is also why custom vehicles do not actually touch the road too. Flying vehicles aren't on the road, but they still act exactly as if they were standard cars on the road. Motorbikes, figures, and narrow vehicle shapes handle exactly the same as standard cars too. The game is using the standard car type, and moving your car parts in accordance to that. If you tried your vehicle with wheels 1 metre (yard) above the track, real logic would say they would not bounce as you drive along...

But to the game it sees you have named 4 wheels on your vehicle, and it starts rotating them (they're still hovering in the air) normally....but completely illogically they still bounce too! The game is using those default car movements, positions, and shapes, but visually affecting your vehicle, which is sometimes not what you're after.
