[In-Depth Tutorial] Making Stickers with Paint.net

Post by ROCKZ » 14 Apr 2009 02:44

Let me start off by saying yes, I am posting a topic covered more than once. I have read the other tutorials and both of them are missing one thing, detail. All of the tutorials (even the FAQ one) left out detail as if rushed through.

Step 1: Acquire Paint.net.

http://www.paint.net/

Step 2: Get an image to import/create.

Use Google image search or draw your picture out.
If you want a transparent image, select the background and delete it. If you want a transparent picture, use the magic wand tool to select the background and then delete it.

Step 3: Making a "Sticker.tga" and "Icon.dds"

Paint.net can save images in both .tga and .dds formats natively making this process easy.

The Sticker.tga can be anything below 400X400. Any higher and the picture quality will suffer.

The Icon.dds HAS TO BE 64X64 or you will get red squares in game.

Make sure when you are saving the Sticker.tga that 32-bit is checked off and compression is not checked off If you forget this step your image will not work.**

Step 4: Puting the "Sticker.tga" and "Icon.dds" into a folder named what the sticker should me named.

Place the two files together in a folder named respectively.
For example, if I was making a sticker of a calculator, I would place Sticker.tga and Icon.dds into a folder called Calculator.

Step 5: Installing the sticker.

Copy the folder to C:/<your Trackmania Directory>/Gamedata/Painter/Stickers.

It works great, Thanks for the tutorial.
Though I think I am doing something wrong.
When I create a sticker , I get all sorts of black lines or stripes from the Sticker I made.
you see the Sticker just fine but where there are edges , Lines appear which strech out all over the vehicle.
is this just a bug or is it something that can be helped ?

oh hey I fixed it.
Sorry for bothering ^_^;

It seems if you first activate "Prelight" at The TM painter , the stickers act normal again.

I don't know how to describe it further but it's solved so. Never mind it ^_^

I see your problem. You need not to have the sticker touch the outside of the image. Here's an example:

Right:

Note: In paint.net the checkerboard is transparency. The white is to show you where to place the sticker. The white should be transparent. Got it?

EDIT: I'm a year late! :roflol:
