[Fix] Restore GBX and TMTP associations

Post by Fergo » 27 Apr 2008 00:10

Hey everyone!
I've installed TMUF and then uninstalled TMU and TMNF. The problem is that now the gbx file is not associated with TMUF. How can I restore the association? (I was about to reinstall TMUF, but then I realized that I would need to reinstall TMU either).

Thanks,
Fergo

Reason: I edited the title so it could be recognized better as a tool, the old title was: "GBX file association", the solution is found later in the post

The problem is that it's not that simple, because you need to setup some arguments to pass to the executable, otherwise it will only open the game and quit right after that.
I resintalled the game and it's now fixed.

Fergo, what did you reinstall to get the gbx file associations to work? I think I have a similar situation. TMNF, then I bought TMU and ran the TMUF patch, now no more association.

Did you reinstall just the TMUF (905MB) update?

I'd like to know this too, I have the same problem. Can you make a tutorial thread in FAQ/Tutorials about how you did it? I'm sure this happened to more people.

I exported my working file association settings from the registry:

Code: Select all

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.Gbx]
@="TrackMania.gbx"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TrackMania.gbx]
"TrackMania file (.gbx)"=""
"EditFlags"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TrackMania.gbx\DefaultIcon]
@="d:\\games\\TmUnitedForever\\Gbx.ico"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TrackMania.gbx\Shell]
@="Open"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TrackMania.gbx\Shell\Open]
@="Open with TrackMania"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TrackMania.gbx\Shell\Open\Command]
@="\"d:\\games\\TmUnitedForever\\TmForever.exe\" /useexedir /singleinst /file=\"%1\""
Copy and paste to a text file, try to change the paths so they match your installation details and then save the file as "gbx.reg". After that double click the "gbx.reg" and click "Yes", then the file extension should be registered.

If this method works, I'll maybe write a little program, that takes over the job.

I had to add...

REGEDIT4

...to the top of the file before I could import it, but after changing to my file locations, this fixed the problem!!

Thanks F*ckFish for the fix!

I hacked a tiny application that lets you define your trackmania directory and then automatically adds the registry values. Please let me know, if it works.

http://www.stabb.de/tmf/gbxtmtptools.exe

100% virus free, I swear =)

/edit: Ah yeah, this is tested on Win XP only, dunno if it works on Vista
/edit again: I just read that it should work on Vista too, but you'll have to run it as Administrator, any comments if this works would be much appreciated
/another edit: changed the link

The little application can now also help users who forgot to install the tmtp-protocol extension and the gbx thumbnail extension. Please let me know if it works =)

Great, that's what I was going to ask about! Thanks.
The TMTP part doesn't seem to work though. It still associates it to d:/games/TmUnitedForever (the default dir) even if I enter something else. The other functions seem to work fine.

For me, the associations got lost when, after I installed TMUF, I installed another TMUF and later uninstalled that again. Or something like that.
I think I'll move this to the Toolbox, since there are useful tools in here now.

Okay, the tmtp issue is fixed now, thanks

If you already registered the faulty link from the last version you can fix it by running "regedit", browsing to "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\tmtp\Shell\Open\Command" and changing the value to your TMForever.exe path or alternatively by deleting "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\tmtp" and running the newer version from http://www.stabb.de/tmf/gbxtmtptools.exe.
