Server Music Error

I have set up my server to allow the upload and download of custom content via the PVP system and opened all ports on my router necessary to do as such. However the server application is still failing to distribute the music.

I know its not my network because when i host the game from within UNITED it works and other people get the music, now im not retarded here. i DID remember to move the music into the challenge music folder. I even made sure that those ports arent being taken.

It would also seem that the P2P system does not transfer music files from player to player, only from server to player.

Either way people aren't getting any music and since all my maps have custom music its quite the suck.

ahh the joys of a music server.. I'd be willing to help but it would help me to have one of your tracks.
Using something to monitor connections helpful netstat and commview, tcpview w/e
and that way you can see if the server trys to download mux
how big are your music files is an improtant question as well as the bandwidth of the server serving them.
IF you live in the states.. you can almost forget about serving music from your home pc..
this is my best guess.. as happened to me in the begginning.
by the time the music is downloaded, the track is over.
try to keep about 5megs or less and use a fast host. get friends to download mux and put in their challegne music folder.. so they don't redownload music all the time.. also get people to increase the size of their cache will help on bandwidth.. and let me tell ya.. it can get crazy.. busy months I am gettign close to my terrabyte limit.

I think you should read my post alittle closer, not that im trying to pick on you or anything ^^; my internet connection is alot faster than normal i have 12mb down and 1mb up and actually can pull that much or more sometimes.

Anyway as i was saying Hosting music period isnt the problem, the dedicated server WONT do it though, however if i run the server from united it does work

infact im running a server in united and dual installed nations and am running 2 games at once as a work around right now and the music still dl's fast enough, EVEN WHILE TORMENTING =D

just the dedicated server refuses to, we tested this vigarousely using a 2k audio drum loop. and nada.

I just took a peek and I'm pretty sure that GameData\ChallengeMusics\ folder in the dedicated is outside the path the server searches for p2p content. Check your checksum.txt file in the GameData\Config directory to see if the song files are listed in it.

If not copy that complete folder into GameData\Skins\ and restart the dedi, then check the checksum.txt file again.

That being said, you really should consider remaking the maps with .locs and uploading the files to a webspace somewhere. I have experimented with this quite a bit over the past 3 years or so and even on a 100mbit upload it's not ideal to distribute files much over 1 megabyte using the servers p2p alone, players with slow connections will suffer.

Hey i think thats it, the MUX files weren't listed im going to play with it now and see what i can cook up.

Oh btw none of my maps are over like... 30k... unless you mean texture maps? but i dont have any other than my car o.O

unless by maps your referring to MUX? please clarify ^^;

That didnt seem to work too well... the checksum only scanns the cache folder aparently. which is one of the folders i allready had the data in,

perhaps i should put it in the tracks folder?

Make sure the directory is named ChallengeMusics, correct letter case can be important. Did you completely shut the server down and restart it? I doubt putting anything in the tracks folder other than maps will help things :) Sometimes you have to delete the Game.FidCache.Gbx file and let it rebuild on a server restart.

You've got me curious now, I'm going to setup a test server and fiddle with this a bit. Are you using Windows or Linux?

Yup, I mean the .mux files themselves. In the map editor, before you add the .mux file and save the map, you should upload a copy of the .mux to a web server that has a direct download (no php script addresses) like http://www.yourserver.com/music/mysong.mux , then test in a web browser that the download actually works.

Then you would make a plain text file in the same directory as the songs .mux on the game client that you are editing the map on named mysong.mux.loc , then paste the whole web address of the uploaded file into that text file http://www.yourserver.com/music/mysong.mux .

That links the file from within the map to a http download that is much faster than using p2p alone and will save a chunk of your game servers upload bandwidth for other tasks.

Alrighty then, I just tested this on the latest dedi and it seems xbx must have disabled scanning the ChallengeMusics folder.

I started a TMU server + a TMN server too just to make sure I was not going goofy and they both found that folder and it's contents in both Gamedata\ChallengeMusics\ and GameData\Skins\ChallengeMusics\, so it used to work...LOL. I guess I just haven't been paying attention.

So it looks like your options are using the game client for a server if you're determined to do it this way, or use .loc's in your maps.

yeah, i put all songs in EVERY FOLDER of the server + a challengemusics Folder in every folder lol (took like 23gigs of copy mux files) and it still didn't work lol

so when i buy my Godady and domain tomorrow ill just host the music from there... as soon as i figure out how that works.

not trying to be rude either.. but 1 meg up.. well your not going to be able to server to many people on that connection.. music wise. Hosting from godaddy will help tons.A 5 meg mux isnt much but it';s a lot when you share it with 20 people.
ALso what folder are you using?
is your dediserver installed in same dir as trackmania?
you say you cant see the songs?? have you added them to the tracks? can you hear them when you play in single player?
below is the proper location for windowsxp for challenge music to be added to tracks.
C:\Documents and Settings\cow\My Documents\TrackMania\ChallengeMusics
(vista slightly differnt)
Last question.. does your server and your game use the same p2p port?
