Relay server going mad

Post by Zahl » 23 Apr 2011 07:00

So basically my relay servers were working for ages, but recently, they start to go apeshit every now and then, and I'm having a hard time getting them to run again. Nothing about my setup has really changed, and the fact that it eventually works after restarting both, the normal server and the relay server several times makes me think my setup isn't exactly wrong.

Two weeks ago, the problem was "just" that the relay servers claimed that there is no free spectator slot, when there are really 10 free slots. I then added the relay servers' logins to the whitelist of all the servers and restarted everything, and it worked again.

This time, the relay servers say this on startup:

Code: Select all

Funny thing is, the server is not running on 188.165.237.63
For two of the three it was solved by simply restarting the game server first and then the relay. But the third one just doesn't want to work.
So I thought maybe the master server has a hick-up and tells the relay server the wrong IP address for the login it should relay (killervirus2), so I changed the command line of the relay server to use the IP:Port combination of the actual game server for the /join=*** parameter... But I still get the exact same output. Why is the relay server trying to connect to this random IP address all of sudden?

Tried again and again during the day, and now the third relay finally works too again.
I just hope it lasts for a bit.

188.165.237.63 doesn't seem to be too random... It's an OVH dedicated server, often used for hosting games, torrentboxes and the like--heavy P2P stuff. Something could have happened on the hosting end like an IP failover or DNS propagation error. Who knows. It makes sense if they are who you use to host.

Nope, I'm using different ISPs, and got the very same problem again now.
The Servers are hosted at Hetzner, the Relays at EUserv, no OVH.

Well, some more restarting until it works again I guess...

188.165.237.63 is maniacup.net

No goddamn clue why it is trying to connect to a server running on that host!?

killervirus2, which should be 188.40.58.150:27170
As said in the OP, I tried passing both to /join=xxxxx

I think a few months ago (before maybe January) it was working perfectly fine for at least half a year, using /join=killervirus2
Changed absolutely nothing about the config during this time, because I'm not even actively playing TM anymore, I'm just running the servers. These problems just came out of nowhere. After these problems started, I tried stuff like changing passwords on the server, setting no password at all, just having a player password but no spectator password, putting the relay server on the guest list, etc... But as far as I can tell, the relay server isn't even trying to connect to the game server, as it has a wrong IP:Port.

I event sent xbx a PM about this, but I'm sure these guys are way too busy with TM2 these days.

I had similar issues a few months ago, when I tried to start relays using TMNF accounts.

The error message mentioned a completely unrelated IP address. I once saw game2.trackamaniaforever.com so I just thought this is a Freezone problem.

No issues with United relays though.

A few weeks ago I tried again to use a TMNF account to create a relay - and it worked (under windows). So maybe Nadeo found a way to allow Nations accounts to run relays..

What is reproducible so far:
If the tm-server is running for at least a few minutes, the relay will never connect successfully.
If you start the tm-server and then the relay server right away for about 5 times, you might succeed. If not, just restart the tm-server and quickly start the relay a dozen times. So my current "fix" to this is to furiously kill and start tm-servers and relays for hours until stuff actually works (ok, it really takes about 15 minutes or so, but still very annoying)
