You also must understand that prolly when they make music for trackmania DS , the format is goign to be much smaller, and I guess they have smaller density to the graphics of the tracks, and the compression will be alot different also.

Yeah, the DS isn't capable of the level of graphic detail that the PC is, so textures will be much lower resolution and take up much less space. Also, in the PC version, there are several versions of each 3D model. The different versions have different levels of geometric detail, so that slower computers can use less complicated models. On the DS, there's no need for multiple versions of the models, because the developers know exactly how powerful the DS is.

If I remember correctly, it's also possible to have other people have lower details cars, but keep a nicer one yourself.
Also, doesn't TM have a kind of level of detail system, where cars automatically turn into their simpler versions when they're too far away to see properly anyway (with a realistic resolution), to save some processing power?
The TM DS might still benefit from such a LOD feature.

It's also important to remember that Trackmania DS probably doesn't share any code with the PC version. Nadeo didn't make it, and the hardware is vastly different. As far as graphics go, it makes more sense to look at other DS games to get an idea of what TM DS will be like.

For example, I'm pretty sure the DS doesn't use mipmaps. This will further cut down on the filesize of the textures, if you're comparing to the PC version.

The hardware may be different, but the DS is still a computer, and TM doesn't really need any PC-exclusive hardware.
I personally believe a port to be more likely than a whole new game.

Mipmaps add one third of texture real estate, although of course without knowing (which I don't) the compression (if any) used on the DS, that number doesn't simply carry over to the file size.
As with the models, it'd be useful to use the same high detail textures, as nobody would even notice on the small screens.
Actually it would probably make it worse due to the moiré-like effect, whatever it's called, which PC games can solve with filtering (bi-/trilinear/anisotropic).
At least... I've never seen a handheld game using any kind of filtering or anti-aliasing.
Of course I never actually owned a handheld...

I did just learn I should really look up the DS, PSP, etc. specs sometime. :)

The DS is just a computer, but it runs 2 processors (you actually write 2 executables that run at the same time) that are ARM architecture instead of x86. Also, graphics and sound on the PC are done through DirectX, whereas the DS has its own unique graphics and sound hardware with their own software interfaces. TM DS will be a "port" because it will look just like TM, but I don't think it will be a "source port" because I don't think it would be feasible or practical to make the PC source code run on the DS. Also, the DS version is made by a different developer, and I recall Florent saying that Nadeo wants to keep their code and game engine to themselves.

You're right, the DS doesn't have any filtering or antialiasing. The high-res textures from the PC would be too large for the DS's RAM, and the DS's screen resolution is so low that you wouldn't even be able to see all the details.

no, I think they don't have anything to show now
it is a teaser one, so that will say the game isn't ready yet for gameplay trailers

A new video from an Alpha version of TM DS : http://www.jeuxvideo.tv/trackmania-ds-a ... 22132.html

It's in French but you can see the game runs well for now.

If the transcription of the engine has succeded, the interface has just been adapted to the console's screen resolution, without using the dual screen yet. Forgottent in the video, the L button to navigate provisionally in the left tabs.
Video author wrote:The game mode played is a customized championship in which he chosed some bult-in tracks and a user-build one.
Some textures are in low details and trees in 2D, but it will change till the final release.

Nice to see they didn't use the directional buttons for gas and brake, that will make playing Stadium properly possible ^^

I didn't see the TMS envs. Probably a good idea to leave them out too, with no analog controls they won't be that interesting anyway.
