Disallowed usernames

Post by Baboy » 26 Jul 2006 10:27

Sorry for making a new announcement for this, but it's a pretty important news for those who want to register, and for old users too. We mods, are trying our best to stop the spambots - for this, we decided to disallow certain usernames - therefore, you can't register with certain words in your name (pretty obvious which kind of words). Here is the list that is probably going to grow with time (highlight the text to see it, it's white):
- porn
- buy
- cheap
- phenter
- sex
- dating
- teens
- free
- drug
- lesbian
- cum
- viagra
- swinger
- tramadol
- xxx
- pharmacy
- tickets
- ****
- valium
- XRumer
- 2Rulez
- warez

The list will be updated with time by me or by other mods/admins. If you can't register your username with one of these words in, you have to change it. Also, it's not very safe for you to use any of these words in your name :) Also, if you think of any word that only spambots use normally, don't hesitate to tell us!

IMPORTANT EDIT: I'm adding some names, that MANY spambots used. For example XRumer was used by 6 spambots, and 2Rulez by 7. Hopefully, at least the most common spambots will not be able to register, soon.

We have to post this so people know.
We are thinking about adding "online" as a non-allowed username, but there are one member who have it in their username, that's why we haven't added that yet.
Baboy and me are at the moment banning and disabling spambots.
We have also disallowed to have *@cashette.com as an email adress, this is because about 80% of all spambots uses this email domain. If you have this as an E-mail adress, please contact us.
I hope you all understand that we have to take these actions to prevent spambots.
Thanks.

Anyway, i edited the text to make it more discreet, just making it white so other people who doesn't want to see doesn't have to.

4500+ users and I bet more than half of those are fake spambot logins. With phpbb you really need to keep an eye on the member list and prune it often. Key to telling non-users are ones that have 0 posts but included a www address.... it's called silent spamming. they do it to increase their google ranking.
I once have to trim them out of a site i run and they were nearly 80% of the signed up users ;)

Well, indeed, I checked around 500 users today, and I probably banned around 100, maybe more. That's very much indeed, and others are coming too.

You might want to add a plugin or something like this.
We don't have any problem with spambots or similar.
2D2DNBAA -> Too Drive to Drunk -> Join my server

Yeah, that's probably true.
I hope an admin will see this so he can change it. (if it's possible)

We have that too, in fact spambots are a little less. Only a little, unluckily.

Strangely the good old F-word is missing from the list.
Actually maybe it's not so strange, I don't really know which (kinds of) names are really popular for bots.

The word "****" is not in because no spambots have used it in their names yet.
