Well, I hope something will be done against all this. Look at the latest 100 users, for example. This can't go on like this.

Did you enable visual confirmation (Requires users enter a code defined by an image when registering.) in the phpBB configuration? Just figured the new phpBB version has that option...

I'm not admin, I'm just mod... I hope it gets enabled, if it isn't yet. But still... today, out of less than the latest 150 users, 29 were spambots I banned - and there were a dozen banned by Acegikmo too.

Just checked, it already is enabled. Looks like they use OCR (Optical Character Recognition) now days. I asked around and people told me that big companies like AOL started to use random audio clips as verification. But since voice recognition is getting better every day...

I really don't see how you could stop them. Always have to try to be a step ahead. But for how long is that going to work? It will end somewhere where the only way to detect if it is a spambot or not is to check the links they are posting. And even that won't always work since you sometimes don't even know if it is spam or just the homepage or company of someone.

There was an interesting article lately about AI reporters:
First it was the typewriter, then the teleprinter. Now a US news service has found a way to replace human beings in the newsroom and is instead using computers to write some of its stories.

Thomson Financial, the business information group, has been using computers to generate some stories since March and is so pleased with the results that it plans to expand the practice.

The computers work so fast that an earnings story can be released within 0.3 seconds of the company making results public.

Mr Burkley said the computer-generated stories had not made any mistakes.

Thomson started writing computer programs for different types of stories, at a cost of $150,000-$200,000 (£79,623-£106,190) per project, to try to catch up with rivals such as Reuters and Bloomberg.
I think in 10 years you won't be able to distinguish a bot from a human anymore at all. There only way to stop them then is to have an anti-spam bot that's a step ahead of the spam bot.

You need a Spam Belle that will distract the Bots by using lots of alcohol and promises of promiscuous sex ...

http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/mod_search.php if you search for "spam", there are lots of mods that aim to prevent bots.

The whole idea behind captchas is that OCR won't work, so if it does, it's not a proper captcha.
Well, not anymore, everything gets cracked over time, the idea behind OCR is to read text that's not perfectly lined up, not necessarily in one colour, etc..
Still, a good captcha can't be beat by your everyday automated spambot company as far as I know.

Problem is, these spambots are getting smarter with time. While initially they all had already suspicious names, there are spambots that aren't suspicious at all - unless you click in a smiley they post, that contains link. Or how about that spambot that recently posted a MAC advertising in the right thread??? It's not that easy. Oh, by the way we have image verification, but 5-6 spambots register almost everyday.

most of them use the same mail domains, i had some using @echofind DOT com and @medafo DOT info

The word "soft" is also used in spambot names, turning user verification could help, sometimes they use fake mail adresses

BTW the most current phpbb version 2.0.21 has image verification included, maybe just upgrading the forum is enough ;)

I'm updating the list with several names that aren't bad words, but are very common in spambot names.

There's a new name to ban...

j2006
It sends Private Messages with spam in:

From Julliet Egbe Good Day Dear.
Abidjan Cote D’Ivoire.
West Africa.

Good Day Dear.

Permit me to inform you of my desire of going into long time relatioship and financial transaction for our mutual benefits hence I write with due respect.
My name is Miss Julliet Egbe and I inherited an important sum of money from my late father Mr Joseph Egbe who died in a recent crisis in Cote d'Ivoire. I wish to request for your assistance in investing this money in a lucrative venture under your directives and guidiance in your country.
I want you to assist me for the transfer of the sum of Ten million five hundred thousand American Dollar ($10.5m) into your designated bank account hence I will give you the contact of the bank where the money is been deposited by my late father so that you can contact them immediately and discuss with them since I am only 22 years of age and do not know much about financial issues.
I will give you some reasonable percentage from the total sum for your assistance while I pray that you do not betray me at last.
Please it is important you contact me immediately for more details on the next step since it is my wish to relocate to your country as soon as this transaction is concluded.

God bless you.

Julliet Egbe.
