changed some permission due to spammer misbehaviour

Post by BLaHiTiS » 01 Dec 2006 22:54

Allright,

because these spambots are on an infestation march on this forum i've set the forum so only admins and mods can post topics in this particular forum, but you an all reply to them..

Only registered users can view the off topic forum as well but you all can post, but i'll not stand here and have them dominate the prime forum (news) anyway..

hope phpbb3 + antispam mod comes soon :)

That should slow them a little ... have you applied the additional anti-spam mods? There's 3 or 4 now.

unfortunately i have no ability to access this board behind the scenes (ftp, mysql), i've asked this 2 weeks ago and if they don't have time for it i'm surely wanting to occupy myself with it...

why not easely build in a captcha class for new users or writing topics? doesnt take long to setup....
http://www.captcha.net/

examples:
http://www.white-hat-web-design.co.uk/a ... aptcha.php
http://captchas.net/sample/php/
http://www.daantje.nl/blog/index.php?buttonID=47
http://www.web-radiation.nl/projects/verificationimage/
http://www.istos.ws/guestbook_anti_spam/index.htm

and manymany mor to find for free on the net...

but that ...
...only admins and mods can post topics in this particular forum...
... is not a solution for a community forum :

i know that, but seeing that i'm the only one who is activly wanting/ having time to fight spam on this foru and NOT being able to get to the ftp phpmyadmin side of things, what can i do befor this forum is totally fubar'ed by spammers ?

besides, thers a captcha in the registration process but they get around that anyway, it must be something new that they also can't solve off-site

Excuse me, I've deleted five yesterday and three today. I've been deleting spambots every single day. Nice to see my efforts are appriciated.

sorry, i didn't mean it that way, i'll add you to my rethoric..

what i mean is the administration side of things... like, getting access to the ftp and people who arn't having time to manage the board. I ofcourse understand this very well, but i am cheering to gain access to help the board further, and if it should be someone with programming skills to implement cusstom stuff like trabtown suggests, then i would wish he gets access as well or suggest that we do something about this..

ofcourse, i apreciate all those mods who help delete spam with me :PP but we need to ask ourself the question, is this what moderators are supposed to do ?

if there's an annoying forum user who always posts gross language or something, we can ban him, but those spambots force themself up on us and giving themself the advantage of posting utter crap on this forum... so they are the biggest blame, :)

..... i defenetly have to say no, its not your job to do that...
someone of the main admins that have access to the ftp and sql should realy do something against that, as the adverts get more and more nasty... i mean, here are alot of kids surfing the board as well...

well, seeing that noone seemsto have the time i would like to do it, it would give me experience in such things. i do it at home too, but to migrate a live board would be a good experience for me, provided that i'm following a checklist :).

well, basicly they are everywhere now.... and i cant bother to delete them rightnow, i have to go to the store today and do some other things;..

viewtopic.php?p=63331#63331

I posted here how I killed off the spambots on my site, problem is you need to be able to modify some of the phpbb2 files on the server and without having access to those this woudn't be much help. It can be fixed in under 30 minutes with proper access.
