Hmm seems to be a very client-unfriendly provider then. For ET, we got an email some time that the database load is very high. The administrator even sent us the follow up of SQL commands queried, so we could find the part of the site that ate the performance. I could even ask back some questions for details to find that loop. After the change, the administrator confirmed that the load came back to a good level.
So here, they'd not just shutdown the site, but write an email, and try to help solving the problem.

I don't know if the rumors are true, but I heard that tm-exchance is offline because they are using to much traffic.
Tm Exchange claims that it's not true because their measurements say otherwise.

Isn't the solution very, very simpel?

On their home-page they have a movie playing in the center. That movie is 16.67MB big.
The avarage tracksize is about 20KB.
16.67MB = 17 070.08 = 854 track downloads

Now, EVERY single visitor downloads ( in theory ) 854 tracks every time he visits tm-exchange. And not once, but every single time that he/she visits the website. Just presh 'Refresh' or F5 and you will see that the movie has to download again.

I have no idea how many visitors they have. Let's say 500/day. That's 8335MB every day, that's about 250GB every month, WASTED TRAFIC!

Why don't they just replace the movie with a nice image.

If traffic is the problem, and I really hope it's not, then they are very stupid by hosting the movie...

The movie is hosted by tm-community.com but I don't know if they share servers or not.

Well I don't know about you but I go straight to united.tm-exchange.com, and I suspect many others do the same. I really do think that their server provider has got it wrong.

You do make a good point though, now that TMF has been released maybe it is wasted bandwidth...

I would agree on that one. Also, if what you say is true Jelle Mees, then why is the main TMX page still there with the movie still playing; surely if they are using too much bandwidth that movie wouldn't play anymore?

Hey guys, i've noticed that Tm-Exchange has'nt revealed much information about the technical difficulties of the site. Why? The last time tmx went down was only for 3 days or so.But now its been like 8 Days. I think that TMX is putting on bad behaviour and not taking action. If it is Net traffic,(which i doubt) Why dont they Increase the bandwidth. Now i know that over hundreds of maps get uploaded each day. which takes up space, but this type of problem has never occured before. If by chance and i hope not, TMX Shuts down it will bring down the Mapping Community and along with all they're memories.
What i have noticed without TMX
- Servers Are having a hard time keeping maps up to date.
- Mappers are not too happy about this incident.
one thing worries me is that i am getting unpatient so are many others.
I would really like to know Wtf is wrong with TMX.
one thing that might solve this problem is creating a PART 2 of tmx
but a seperate domain...maybe http://www.tm-exchange2.com, but before doing that they should put the site back online, and on the homepage it can say in big letters or a link to it saying.

Hi everyone, we are soon moving to a new host. Unfortunetly getting that kind of thing sorted takes alittle bit of time.

If things run smoothly from now it will only be a matter of days, if things dont run so smoothly it will be alittle longer.

That's just silly.

First of all, the previous big outage took several weeks, last September/October, and TMX came back then too.
Second, the TMX guys are busy people, and don't post when they have nothing new to report.
Third, you obviously have no idea what's involved with hosting a popular site, but making hosting changes can take quite some time.
Fourth, MrA just posted new information: they are moving, and it will take more time.

So, take a chill pill and don't get antsy when something takes a few days. No lives depend on all this, after all.
