TMX down [26th Aug: TMX now up]

Post by MrA » 19 Aug 2008 19:16

Hi everyone.

We are sorry to say we have to take TMX offline again for a short time. We are doing a backup of the entire site and databases ready for a server move.

The move is not our choice, our host is moving to a new datacenter, and we want to have our own copy of the site, which is over 30GB in size, before anyone starts moving anything.

We hope you will all be back with us soon. We might be able to put the site up in a 'read only' state after the backup so that at least tracks can be downloaded, but any additional download figures will be lost if we do have to return to the backup.

Once the server move is done we might have some small 'optimisation' down times, but eventually we are aiming for a good and stable TMX.

Thanks for the suport of everyone.

Regards,
TMX Crew

Thx for letting us know ;) Although one question, what do you mean with: "...short time...", a day, a week, a month?

Our new server is being installed as we speak, so we're expecting to be online within 2 days (we need to configure the server too).
A nice things is that our new server is faster then the old one. So you can expect a faster TMX in the future :)

Faster websites are always a good thing, especially when it's as popular as good old TMX. :)

At least this time the website isn't having monster errors or angry hosts.

Faster would be nice I guess. Stable would be priceless.

Edit: Oh yeah, thanks for creating this topic. (Makes this much less stressful.)

When will guys like you realize that sites like TMX are community based and all work they do is free of charge and they don't get paid for that. Stop complaining about 2 days of downtime and enjoy the fact, that there are people that hold the community together with a lot of work they do in their freetime.
inactive, sorry

Ya they do well ...If all is for the better then its all good ... plus this time they notified well on site and here on the forums of reason so im sure people wont panick so much this time...

...i dont deal with the site directly much (i do sometimes award and play and create but rarely) but the use it has a library of tracks from in server is "pricless" and very very handy

...Good luck and see you online soon TMX :lovetm

it's BECAUSE they are so important for the community we hold them to a higher standard. face it, this downtime is unnecessary, the downtime that will come afterwards, when they're actually switching over IS necessary.

You ever tried backing up something that was active (i would think alot of tracks per minuite being accessed and uploaded and replays, comments awards etc..) successfully withought data loss or user inconvenience? ...If so Your right .. . But i somehow doubt it :3

The read only suggestion is a good idea .. would be handy and no data loss etc ... as for how much work that is to do .. im unaware .. i sure they do there best

We did consider trying some kind of read-only mode during the backup, but the small % chance that this might cause a problem with taking the backup (ie making it unusable or corrupt) means that the risk is not worth it. The most important thing in the last 24hrs has been securing the data.

Why? Because if things were to start going wrong between the host and the datacenter and/or the new datacenter then we might need our own private backup of the site. We've been in a situation before where we are stuck between disputing 3rd parties and its not a nice place to be. We don't plan on being there again if we can help it.

I know it must look like the site is falling to pieces at the moment but really it isn't. There was a hardware problem a week or two ago which took way too long to get fixed, but that was not in our control. We then did some really good server optimisation work which also required some downtime. As well as that we have very recently implemented improved database maintenence procedures and fixed some long standing bugs in the code.

So we just need to work through this current situation. If we get our new server today, then the site can be up by tonight. It we dont then it will be abit longer. If things start going badly wrong, we have our own backup.
