[GIMP]Creating your own Layers

Post by Swivelgames » 23 Jul 2007 23:35

Hey all,

Just by messing around with a few things in the GIMP, I've managed to find an easy way to make Layers for TrackMania Nations.

First off, you'll need a few tools: For step one, after you have installed all the programs and plugins(read readme's if your wondering where to put the .dds plugin), we will want to have a base Layer so that we know what we're doing ;) .

Navigate to your \GameData\Painter\Layers\StadiumCar\ folder where you will see another folder called PreLight. Copy that and paste it into the same folder. Now you should see that there are two folders, and one is called Copy of PreLight. Rename Copy of PreLight to MyNewLayer. You can change the name all you want, thats just the name I'm going to use in this tutorial :) .

Once thats done and you have your PreLight and MyNewLayer folders in your directory, open the GIMP that you downloaded and installed before and navigate to your new folder(should be \GameData\Painter\Layers\StadiumCar\MyNewLayer) and open the Layer.dds. If you installed the .dds plugin correctly then it should open right up. (Warning: This file is large in resolution and size. Slow computers be advised ;) ) You should now see something along the lines of:
  • Image
Now, you get to choose what color your going to make it. As for me, I'm going to choose a blueish color. Go into Filters>Colors>Colorify and select the color you wish to make it. Try to stick with the main colors there, I'll tell you why later on.

Now that you have your color, you can do what you wish with it! When saving, you want to save it as Layer.dds with 'DXT1' compression.

I'm going to add some cool effects to mine, heres what I'm going to do:
  • First, I colored my car blue
  • Now, using different effects and tools,
I'm going to add some text and some cool
effects to it. I used brushes that I downloaded
for GIMP. You can find many if you search for
    them on Google.
  • After that, I added some text and a
    drop shadow to the text.
  • When I finished, it turned out to
    look like this:
    • Image
Now, we're not done yet. You now need to open TrackMania Nations, and navigate to the Editors menu. Select Paint and click a random car to start with. In the Painter, choose the color tool and color the whole car what ever color you want. White or Silver is a recommended color if you don't know how the others will turn out. Choosing a different colorand mixing it with your layers color, might come out odd. For instance, if you choose green and you 'Colorified' your layer red, it will turn out as a yellow car. Just mess around with the colors and see how they look. Progress:

Once you've selected a color you want to use as a base, click on the Layers tool and click on your new layer that you created. Right now the icons look the same, but this can be changed by simply editing the Icon.dds file in the GIMP.
Heres a visual idea of the progress right now:

Now for the touch ups. Do what you like. What I did:
I made the helmet black and the visor a metallic grey.
After that I made my wings black as well as the details
around my engine. Pretty cool :)

Heres how mine turned out:
  • Image
How did yours do? Take a screen-shot and post it(make sure to resize, crop it or
post a thumbnail with a link to the original so its not very large.

Now, to save it. You selected a random countries car to paint, but of course,
we don't want to overwrite the countries car with your new custom one. So
heres what you do: click on the "Save Work As..." button right next to the
save button, enter your new cars name that you would like it to be, and then
click save. Screeny :D
  • Image
Your new car will be automatically made as your selected driving skin. No
need to go into the profile editor and select it, its already done. All you have
to do is go RACE! :D

Hope this tutorial was useful!
Question, and comments are appreciated!
Post your creations!
If you find any spelling errors, confusing parts in the tutorial, or other mess ups please comment about it and I should be able to help you/fix it.

Can someone please move this to the "CREATIONS/Skins" forum? I think I posted it in the wrong section, lol.

I'm not sure, but if TMU uses the same Layer system as TMN(most likely) then yes.

Thanks for the reply!

Mind posting up what you did?
I would like to see how it turned out :D

Very clear Tutor, but why can't I save my painted car?

Edit; Okay, added some picures to show that I’m not speaking from the back of my neck.

So I created a MyNewLayer-folder(copy of ‘Prelight’) and open the Layer.dds thats in that folder, telling Gimp to use mipmaps;

Image

Next I color it using Colorify from the Colors-menu after which it goes Yellow.

Image

Next I go and Save the skin using ‘Save as’.
Here I’m telling it to use mipmaps again and select the compression-type;

Image

Next I use the Yellow skin in the Editor, renaming the customized car before initialising Save as.
After it looks like it is being saved, I close the Editor and get this window;

Image
'This skin is using 3D-textures without mipmaps, this is invalid.

Don’t have a clue what went wrong..??

Hééélp.. :ftw:

I'm having exactly the same problem as "burritoboj"
currently playing around with the compression to see if that has anything to do with it.
